The first step in making a lighting plan is an orderly assessment of lighting needs. These will normally fall into three categories.

Light for specific visual functions, now often called task lighting. This means providing adequate and suitable light for every activity that depends or good vision. The typical tasks that call for special light are. Reading, writing, sewing, drafting, food preparation and cooking, eating, dressing and washing. Plus any number of special tasks that may arise in a particular home environment, in work places such as offices, factories and hospitals, or in such special purpose interiors as theaters.etc.
